Bali pass was an old trekking route from the tons river valley to the Yamuna river valley. It continues to attract trekkers due to its virgin trails and the experience of camping above 4000m. The pass is more approachable from the har-ki-dun valley as the gradient is small and gives good time for the trekkers to acclimatize to the altitude. The trek starts from Sankri and passes through the Govind National Park, which is famous for its wild flowers.
It gives you an opportunity to visit the sacred lake at Ruinsara Tal and to explore the less travelled path over Yamunotri pass to Yamunotri temple. The meadows near the Ruinsara lake are an ideal place to rest and explore the nearby peaks and passes. The area is surrounded by Banderpoonch range and some of the famous peaks are Kalanag, Banderpoonch west and Ruinsara. This region was made popular by Jack Gibson, a teacher at the Doon school in the late 1940's. The surrounding peaks and glaciers in the swargarohini Range and Banderpoonch range are a mountaineer's delight.
Day 1 Drive from Dehradun to Sankri
The drive from Dehradun to Sankri passes through Mussoorie, Kempty Fall, Nainbagh & Purola. After checkpost at Netwar, the final 20km stretch lies in the forest of Govind National Park. The drive to Sankri is very beautiful, past pine and deodar forest. Overnight in guest houses in Sankri.
Day 2 Sankri to Seema via Taluka
Sankri is a beautiful himalayan village and is also the basecamp of Har Ki Dun Valley & Kedarkantha Trek. There is a motorable road connecting till taluka, but the walk through the forest is also delightful. Taluka is a small village with some shops and dhabas. After crossing taluka, continue along the Tons river. It is a lovely walk along the left of the river, passing through forests, apple orchards and fields. Today we’ll camp alongside the river or on the open ground Campsite after dinner & bonfire.
Day 3 Seema to Roiltia Waterfall Camp
Today we’ll continue along the right of the valley along the tons river. The trail ascends through the fields and climbs high above the confluence of the tons and Ruinsara gad. We reach roiltia after crossing the meadow of Devsu Bugyal. The nearby waterfall will be our campsite for today with the view of Osla village & Puoni.
Day 4 Roiltia to Ruinsara Lake
Today we ascend into the Ruinsara valley. There is a stark difference in the vegetation with pine and fir giving way to birch and rhododendron. Ruinsara Taal is a high altitude lake surrounded by meadows and rhododendron bushes. It is considered sacred by the locals. The walk through the forests is beautiful, with Kalanag Peak (6387metres) visible straight ahead in the valley. Overnight in camps near the Ruinsara Tal or Lake.
Day 5 Rest Day at Ruinsara Lake
Today we rest near the Ruinsara lake and will spent the day exploring the nearby valleys and glaciers. This will help us to acclimatize before the next day's climb to the pass. We reach Kyarkoti which is the base camp for Black Peak (Kalanag) and Dumdar Kandi Pass. By evening, return back to the Ruinsara Lake campsite.
Day 6 Ruinsara Lake To Godari
Today we start the day early so as to reach Godari before afternoon. We camp below the pass along the glacial moraine. This is the one of the best campsite with the valley below and the pass behind you. Camping at this high altitude campsite is a new experience which very few other treks offer.
Day 7 Godari To Upper Dhamni via. Bali Pass
Today we start very early to reach Upper Dhamni via. Bali Pass. The trail is usually over the ridge with a steep climb up to the Bali Pass. At Bali Pass, you get a gorgeous view of various peaks from here. After spending some time at Bali pass, we descend down into the alpine zone and reach the camping grounds of Upper Dhamni. Upper Dhamni with water source nearby would be our today’s campsite.
Day 8 Upper Dhamni To Hanumanchatti via. Yamunotri
Today we descend from Upper Dhamni to Yamunotri through the forested trail. Yamunotri Dham is one of the Chardham of Uttarakhand. After a short visit to the famous shrine of Yamunotri, we follow the downward pilgrim trail to Hanuman Chatti. Overnight stay in guesthouse at Hanuman Chatti.
